Theresa was the only daughter of Henry Sylvester Stannard. She was born at Flitwick on December 14th, 1898. Theresa was educated at Bedford High School and received her artistic training from her father. Theresa showed early promise and by the age of sixteen she had had a picture exhibited at the Royal Academy. Like other members of the Stannard family, Theresa’s paintings were favoured by the Royal family: both Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra purchased her work.
Stannard had many imitators, particularly of the ‘cottage door’ variety, but few equals. Among the better practitioners of the genre along with Stannard were Helen Allingham, Myles Birket Foster and Arthur Claude Strachan. Stannard’s watercolours of picturesque old cottages enjoy almost worldwide fame. She made this subject his own speciality and with his delicate and soft coloured palette.
