The third son of James Paterson, RSA, and his wife Eliza Ferguson, Hamish Constable Paterson was born in 1890 and died in 1955. He was named after Constable, an artist much admired by his father. Hamish, after an initial period in an architect's office and a period working as apprentice to James Valentine, a stained glass designer, studied at Edinburgh School of Art. He was particularly skilled at portraiture and obtained various commissions. Later he moved to France and concentrated on landscape painting before moving back to his home town of Moniaive in Dumfriesshire two years before his death. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1912 until 1949 exhibiting a portrait of Robert Sivell in 1935.
