ARTIST: THÉOBALD CHARTRAN (1849-1907) SIZE: 11 x 13 3/4 in./28 x 35 cm DESCRIPTION: With every iota of detailed majesty on display, Chartran photographically commits Bernhardt to the page in her role of the princess Gismonda, resplendent in all her Byzantine glory. “Bernhardt’s turn to melodrama took her from the classical theaters of France to the more popular realm of the Grands Boulevards, and it was the publicity for these more popular houses that in turn brought her to Alphonse Mucha. The Czech-born decorative pioneer of Art Nouveau owed his initial public recognition to the seven posters he made to advertise Bernhardt’s theatrical roles... From 1895 to 1900, when he was under contract to the actress, Mucha also designed stage sets and costumes for her productions” (Bernhardt/Drama, p. 59). The photograph appears to be hand-colored, and includes a signed dedication from Ms. Bernhardt in French (Art Nouveau; Theatre; Sarah Bernhardt)
Size of image 21 x 15 cm
